Things to Do in Villefranche-sur-Mer: old town, Cocteau chapel, beach and a half-day plan

By EnzoUpdated 8 min read

Villefranche-sur-Mer is built like an amphitheatre around a bay, one of the deepest natural harbours on the Mediterranean, with an old town of stairways and lanes, a chapel decorated by Jean Cocteau and a 16th-century citadel. Here is what is worth your time, with prices and hours taken from official sources, a half-day plan, and what is closed right now, including the citadel's museums.

On a budget

The old town, Rue Obscure, the port, the Darse, the bay and the markets are free. Only the chapel charges, at €4.

For culture

Saint-Pierre Chapel by Cocteau is the one not to miss. The citadel's Goetz-Boumeester and Volti museums are mentioned in guides but cannot be visited today.

On a rainy day

The lanes are open air. Saint-Michel church (daily, 9 am to 6 pm) and the chapel (Wednesday to Sunday) are the two indoor sites I could confirm.

For walkers

The old town is lanes and stairways, so wear comfortable shoes. I have not collected durations or routes for coastal paths.

Grasseuil (also called l'Espalmador) is a small, more intimate beach near the entrance to Cap Ferrat. Private beach clubs exist too and I do not give their prices.

Villefranche-sur-Mer works well as a day trip from Nice: the train takes a few minutes. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the port in the evening. I give no hotel prices until I have a dated survey.

The town is walkable, with a lot of stairs. From Nice-Ville allow 5 to 10 minutes depending on the source (TER fare €3.60). Buses 15 and 600 stop at Octroi.
